Jang Dong-yoon stands alone against the world in KBS’s Oasis

With each new teaser for KBS’s Oasis, we learn a little more about our tragic hero Jang Dong-yoon (Search), who is forced to make difficult decisions, given the limited options in his life.

Spanning the decade between 1980 and 1990 in South Korea, the story follows Lee Doo-hak (Jang Dong-yoon) along with Seol In-ah (Business Proposal) and Choo Young-woo (Once Upon a Small Town) as they enter into adulthood together and grapple with life’s changing tides that shake the bonds of their friendship.

The teaser begins with Doo-hak and Choi Chul-woong (Choo Young-woo) running off to school as peers, except Doo-hak receives a warning from his dad Kim Myung-soo (The King of Tears, Lee Bang-won): “I’m telling you to not win, if it’s something that Chul-woong is doing. Whatever that may be.” Doo-hak lashes back in anger, “Why is it that I shouldn’t study? Why do I have to live like a slave too!?” But Chul-woong shows support to Doo-hak as well, saying, “Hyung, don’t make me into a jerk. If you’re interested, then we should compete fair and square.”

We then see Chul-woong’s first encounter with Oh Jung-shin (Seol In-ah) and, true to his nature, Chul-woong is upfront about his feelings. Although our young trio happily walk off together arm-in-arm, the appearing text screen is quick to tell us that their intertwined fate will lead them astray. Jumping ahead in time, the teaser cuts to a tense encounter between our two grown boys and the sneer Queen Mom Kang Kyung-heon (Alchemy of Souls) tells her son to cut ties with Doo-hak.

Meanwhile, Jung-shin gets caught in one of Doo-hak’s fights and Chul-woong races there to save her. Frustrated, she curses at one of our boys that even if all the world is pointing fingers, he of all people shouldn’t be doing this. As we watch our hero getting into more trouble, the teaser comes to a close on Doo-hak’s dilemma as he argues with his dad, defending and demanding that, “Everything turned out the way you wanted. There’s nothing else I can do, other than being in a gang. Should I just die? Tell me!”

With scripts by Jung Hyung-soo (Kye Baek, Damo) and PD Han Hee (Goodbye Mr. Black, Empress Ki) directing, Oasis premieres on March 6, following Brain Works in KBS’s Monday-Tuesday slot.
