Premiere Watch: Sponsor, Juvenile Justice, Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce) 3
by missvictrix
The drama lineup continues to fill out this week with Netflix’s latest original, and two smaller cable dramas of the melo variety. If we’ve learned anything it’s that these smaller shows on smaller channels can really take off, so I’ll be keeping my eyes on these for sure.
Sponsor
Time slot: Wednesday-Thursday
Broadcaster: iHQ, MBN
Genre: Romance, melodrama
Episode count: 12
Reasons to watch: This melodrama has had a more-than-appropriate amount of its own melodrama behind the scenes, and now, it’s time to see what sort of drama is at hand. In this tale of greed and reckless ambition, we have four main characters (played by Lee Ji-hoon, Han Chae-young, Gu Ja-sung, and Ji Yi-soo) whose stories overlap in likely outrageous ways. From sponsors to affairs and other intrigues, this drama has been touted as telling the story of characters who collide like runaway trains. Let’s brace for impact.
Juvenile Justice
Time slot: Friday
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Drama, legal, crime
Episode count: 10
Reasons to watch: Netflix returns after a short break with their next original — a legal drama about juvenile offenders and the judges who decide their fates. With Kim Hye-soo in the lead, and Kim Mu-yeol, Lee Jung-eun, and Lee Sung-min rounding out the cast, it’s a no-brainer that this drama will boast quality performances. But it’s also full of South Korea’s real-life social and political issues around juvenile crime, so it will be interesting to see not only how this drama is received, but what sort of a message it shares.
Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce) 3
Time slot: Saturday-Sunday
Broadcaster: TV Chosun
Genre: Drama, melodrama, romance
Episode count: 16
Reasons to watch: I have to be honest, I didn’t even realize that Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce) was still on the table, never mind entering its third season! This multi-generational tale of married women and their cheating husbands continues, and will surely continue to earn its makjang label for TV Chosun. Notably, Sung Hoon and Lee Tae-gon have opted out of Season 3, though their characters remain behind (replaced by Kang Shin-hyo and Ji Young-san, respectively). Actor shifts are often off-putting and hard to adapt to, but it seems like the drama (and the melodrama) are going full steam ahead.
