Crazy Love: Episodes 7-8

According to our mathematician, the key to a convincing lie is putting on such a dazzling show that it distracts people from asking questions. And if there’s one thing these two have in spades, it’s the ability to dazzle and confound. Trouble is, they might just end up confounding themselves while they’re at it.

After their bonding experience last week, our couple has begun to see each other in a new light. For starters, Go-jin spends a significant amount of time staring thoughtfully at a potato, because it evokes a mixed set of emotions in him.

Shin-ah’s father giving him a potato to eat had sparked the memory of his grandmother doing that when he was a kid. (Incidentally, he hates onions for a similar but opposite reason – growing up poor and having to eat onions at every meal gave the other kids fuel to bully him.) He’s so touched by the connection that he even *gasp* contemplates apologizing for kicking Shin-ah and her truckload of potato boxes out of his car.

Shin-ah, meanwhile, catches a glimpse of Go-jin watching TV, completely enthralled in the emotions of the story. This humanizes him in her eyes so much that it smites her conscience, and she decides it’s time to forgive and move on with what’s left of her life.

To that end, she goes about doing nice things like cooking him breakfast… which, of course, makes him think she’s trying to poison him. (She doesn’t help matters by musing out loud that life is shorter than you think right as he finally musters enough courage to take a bite.)

But just when Shin-ah starts to say goodbye to the people she loves without outright telling them that’s what she’s doing, everything gets turned upside-down again – because she’s not actually dying. Thank goodness! Her MRI results got mixed up with someone else’s, and she’s perfectly healthy. Of course, now she has to deal with the mess her lie has made.

The thing is, Shin-ah’s done a lot of damage in a very short amount of time. She’s given all of Go-jin’s employees extra perks like beef dinners, she’s used the company card to cover the janitor’s son’s hospital bills, and she’s punched perfect 5-centimeter-spaced holes in all of Go-jin’s suits. To name a few.

Everywhere Go-jin turns, he finds a new manifestation of her revenge, and it drives him absolutely bananas. His private detective can’t find anything out of the ordinary on her, but Go-jin is convinced she’s in league with his would-be murderer. His suspicions appear to be confirmed when he catches her packing up, so he reveals that he never had amnesia, adopting the most terrifying, syrupy-sweet voice to do so.

Panicking at his threat to have her thrown in prison, Shin-ah begs for mercy, offering to do anything he wants in exchange. He immediately makes her regret those words by presenting a contract: she’ll keep up the fiancée act and work as his driver and housekeeper, still pretending he has amnesia, until she can pay off the entire amount she’s cost him in damages. Reluctantly, Shin-ah signs.

Just like that, Go-jin is back to his normal, tyrannical self, milking every bit of misery he can give back to her. It’s kind of disheartening how quickly Shin-ah reverts back to ducking her head and taking the verbal abuse, but I guess he is holding a prison sentence and about 1 billion won (about $800,000) over her.

While Go-jin’s attention is diverted with tormenting Shin-ah (and dancing in his office for the joy of having the upper hand again), Yang-tae plots against him. But far from having murder on the brain, Yang-tae’s big scheme is to publish study guides using plagiarized material from the study guides GoTop was planning to put out in just a few weeks, courtesy of Eun-jung.

The study guides sell like hotcakes, but either Go-jin anticipated this or Yang-tae’s just unlucky, because complaints start rolling in about critical mistakes throughout the book. Go-jin hid them inside the original material, planning a giveaway contest for students who could identify the errors, and Yang-tae didn’t bother to proofread. Whoops.

Adding injury to insult, Yang-tae learns about this from Go-jin himself at a big public event, right before downing a drugged beverage intended for Go-jin. We don’t see who tampered with the drink, but Go-jin does notice that Yang-tae’s watch looks an awful lot like the one his mysterious assaulter wore.

But you know who else 1) has that watch, 2) has been looking rather shifty lately, and 3) has been concealing information about Kang Min from Go-jin? Se-gi. Maybe there’ll still be a surprising twist there, but the dramatic reveal of Se-gi’s watch sure felt like it was supposed to be a shocking one.

In any case, one person who doesn’t seem to be plotting against Go-jin (at least, not yet) is Soo-young. Unlike her money-and-power-hungry father, she has no interest in taking over GoTop, and never has. She also claims she married someone she didn’t love to protect her love (Go-jin), and if there’s one thing that irks me about her, it’s that she takes for granted her idea that she can just walk right back into Go-jin’s life the same way she walked out.

When Soo-young finds out Shin-ah is Go-jin’s secretary, she even remarks that the two of them “share a man,” which seems a tad presumptuous considering she believes Go-jin doesn’t remember their past relationship.

But Go-jin certainly does remember, and harbors very strong, painful feelings towards her. Those feelings are only exacerbated when Soo-young’s family background and new position as CEO of GoTop’s up-and-coming rival company are revealed.

Go-jin hits back with a reveal of his own (his fiancée) and then hammers it home by kissing Shin-ah right in front of Soo-young. Let the revenge games continue!
