Open Thread #752

Weih, this is very interesting (as are all your posts.) I look forward each week to your contribution to the open thread.

The point about scale adapted to the home screen is thought-provoking. I might also cite the ability of Korean film makers to put a distinctive twist on familiar Hollywood genres–action thrillers, romances, sci-fi fantasy. However, there is one other thing that can’t be neglected. Everyone rightfully credits Netflix, but I think even more important is the international power of CJ Group and other Korean entertainment conglomerates, which has extended into the U.S. industry for some time now. I’m not a fan of powerful corporations generally, but I’ve always been impressed with Miky Lee, as a female “mogul” who, as I understand it, pretty much brought kpop to the U.S., was the key sponsor to Bong Joon Ho, and whose other Hollywood connections have paved the way for this flow of Korean talent to Southern California. What I find particularly remarkable about her, as a brilliant and powerful woman executive, part of the Samsung chaebol, is that she is willing to fund projects like Parasite–which are so critical of the society of which she is a part.

Actually, not to run on about this, that is what I admire about a lot of kdramas, and its what made some American t.v. shows good as well–the awareness and critique of social problems even as they provide humor, action, and romance, that make the critique less preachy and easier to swallow.
