Everyone’s still just hanging on by a thread with secrets piling up until the neighborhood is sure to explode. Our chef shakes the residents up, hoping for a clue as to who might’ve been involved in his sister’s disappearance. Meanwhile, our hapless heroine is determined to rein in her fear and her growing crush, both of which prove more difficult to wrangle than she’d like.

EPISODES 5-6 WEECAP

We pick back up where we left off with Da-hyun being attacked by the stalker… except it’s a dream. (I hate when dramas do those shock-value fake-outs.) Da-hyun’s PTSD nightmares worsen after the realization that the stalker is likely alive, but she’s determined not to let him win. She even studies self-defense techniques to try to combat her fear.

Da-hyun also attempts to create distance (literally and figuratively) between her and Gye-hoon, but that lasts a few days, tops. Even when she’s freezing him out, she can’t help her heart fluttering every time the light hits him just right or he does something nice for her.

Gye-hoon isn’t doing anything to help either with all his mixed signals. He also tries to distance himself and says he has no intention of being friends – he has a mission to complete, after all – but then he comes running whenever Da-hyun feels a twinge of fear or sadness. The hot-and-cold routine just leads to a whole lot of confusion for everyone.

Speaking of his mission, Gye-hoon makes a bold step in his plan to solve his sister’s disappearance and tells the neighborhood ajummas his full name. It doesn’t take long for one of the ajummas to remember, and then the gossip that Gye-young’s brother has returned to take revenge spreads like wildfire.

And everyone acts shady as hell. Honestly, they all seem to know something about what happened, even Bok-hee and halmeoni. Strangely, Da-hyun can’t remember the event itself, although she does recall Gye-young being the only kid in the neighborhood who befriended her.

We learn a bit more about Gye-young’s case and the main suspect in her disappearance. His name is HAN EUI-CHAN, and he was her piano teacher. Although it seems unlikely he killed her, he does appear to know something about what happened that day. He keeps hovering around Gye-hoon who finally gets him to talk. Eui-chan apologizes to Gye-hoon, saying he was supposed to give Gye-young a ride that day. But he won’t say more about what happened.

Learning about the trauma Gye-hoon has been through certainly doesn’t help Da-hyun rid herself of her crush. It does help her realize that he thought she might be Gye-young, hence his concern toward her and insistence she not like him. She wants to comfort him, but isn’t sure how, especially since he never acknowledges his own pain.

Da-hyun gets a taste of what his family life has been like when his mother calls him, insisting she saw Gye-young. She watches as Gye-hoon searches for his mother frantically and gently tries to take her home when he finds her. Da-hyun is horrified to see his mother hit and scream at him that everything is his fault. Oof, it’s hard watching Gye-hoon just stand there and take it without a word, like it’s his role to be his mother’s punching bag.

He later insists he’s fine, making it sadder by saying he’s used to it. Da-hyun can’t hold back her tears for him, and her feelings finally give him permission to cry. Of course, he then insists he totally wasn’t crying and even resorts to telling Da-hyun about the link to prove those were her tears, not his. Naturally, she doesn’t believe him and thinks it’s a joke out of embarrassment.

Meanwhile, Won-tak’s threats to the abuser work to keep him silent, although Min-jo immediately suspects Won-tak. She’s seen his vicious side when they dated and he beat down another guy who disrespected her. Won-tak lies that he didn’t do it this time, but she doesn’t seem to believe him.

And then there’s Eun-jung who is still on her mission to find her little brother. She feels a kinship to Gye-hoon after learning what happened to his little sister and tells Jin-hoon and Da-hyun that if someone hurt her sibling, she’d maul them to death.

This woman is kind of terrifying and getting more and more desperate. She ends up following Da-hyun one night, leading to an altercation with Bok-hee and halmeoni. Thanks to Da-hyun’s ex-coworker stopping by Bok-hee’s restaurant and recognizing Eun-jung, Bok-hee and halmoeni now know she’s the stalker’s sister. Even Eun-jung looks a little scared of halmeoni.

But Da-hyun is as careless as ever and talks openly with Gye-hoon at his restaurant about the stalker – words like “kill” and “fridge” are thrown around. In fact, both Eun-jung and Jin-hoon are eavesdropping around the corner and hear Da-hyun say she won’t tremble in fear until Lee Jing-eun (the stalker) shows back up.

And show back up he does. He starts sending Da-hyun all these creepy Instagram messages about how he’s “sorting out his feelings” but has ultimately decided to forgive her. Then, to top it all off, he says he’s been watching from nearby and is going to “visit” her family and new friends.

Shortly after reading that terrifying message, Da-hyun can’t find her mom and halmeoni. She panics, which sends Gye-hoon running to her. When they find her family, Da-hyun finally shares that the stalker is still alive and might be coming after them. Bok-hee and halmeoni are mostly just relieved that Da-hyun no longer has to worry about being caught as a murderer.

In another careless move, Da-hyun remembers that she still has the stalker’s phone and turns it on. Not only that, but she ANSWERS IT when it rings. He may not be dead, but he’s still missing, so you’d think she’d try for a bit of caution. Anyway, Da-hyun hears Eun-jung’s voice on the other end.

Eun-jung is tired of pretending, so once Da-hyun confirms she knows who she is, they have a frank conversation. Eun-jung begs Da-hyun to tell her where her little brother is, but Da-hyun replies honestly that she doesn’t know. She tells Eun-jung that they’ll have a real talk once Jing-eun returns.

While they’re having an intense chat, the stalker decides to stop by Gye-hoon’s. He’s his usual creepy self, talking about his “girlfriend” who lives nearby. Gye-hoon knows something is off, but it doesn’t hit him that this man is the stalker until after he leaves.

Once Gye-hoon realizes who he is, he calls Da-hyun in a panic to warn her, but he’s too late. Gye-hoon runs to find her as Jing-eun approaches Da-hyun in a dark alley. The stalker pulls something out of his pocket. The episode ends with Da-hyun standing rooted in place by fear as her mind tells her to run.

Okay, so now the stalker is really back. I have no idea what his relationship with his sister is like, but here’s hoping she can control him. That’s assuming she has a problem with his behavior – it’s hard to tell how far her insanely intense protectiveness goes. I’d hope she’d draw the line at stalking and attempted murder, but I’m not sure.

Then we’ve got the whole neighborhood acting guilty and shifty about Gye-young. What in the world happened? It’s like everyone is in on the disappearance, or at least has something to hide from that day. The shaman at the time proclaimed that there was more than one person involved, and I wouldn’t be surprised if half the neighborhood had a hand in it at this point. The question is why.
