[What happens after My Liberation Notes ends?] After the curtain falls

Ki-jung: As a selfless and faithful lover, Ki-jung gives her best to make her relationship with Tae-hoon work. However, during one of her chats with her boss Jin-woo, she realizes that Tae-hoon understanding her philosophy alone will not keep their relationship afloat. That she risks burnout from their relationship.

As usual, Ki-jung makes excuses for Tae-hoon, but Jin-woo stops her and asks, “Do you realize the kind of agreement you are entering into?” Then he spells it out for her. “He wants you without any risk of losing his family. And that family is bent on making your stay a living hell, and yet he does nothing about it, and acts like a passive bystander. What becomes of you when you settle down with him? You’ll be walking on eggshells around your husband’s family, expressly because your husband kept mute. Is that the kind of head you deserve to pick up?”

Ki-jung realizes how exhausted she is, and the tears fall. Jin-woo walks with her through the stages of her grief over her breakup. As weeks become months, she finally notices the man who would willingly pick up her head, as she would his. Their relationship evolves, and we see that she is entering a good place. Jin-woo has always be there to ground her, but now she sees beyond the help and encouragement and looks to the man that’s been offering it. They live happily ever after.

Gu and Mi-jung: Mi-jung remains as Gu’s pseudo-therapist, and ten sessions have now become close to 100 sessions. At the beginning of their meetings, Gu pointed out that he wants to leave the gangster world but he just can’t. So he and Mi-jung work out a way for him to fight his demons while in Seoul. His major win: he takes down his alcoholism. His major loss: he still has the violent tendencies that cause him to withdraw from Mi-jung.

His losses, however, outweigh his wins, so he decides to do what must be done, and leave Chairman Shin’s side. As expected, Shin resists, and uses their history against him. Mi-jung decides to step in and speak to Shin herself, appealing to Shin and Gu’s history, and as the only paternal figure he has left. She gets through to him, and Gu manages to leave the gangster world behind as Ok-ja, Gu’s understudy, takes over his operations.

To Daddy Yeom’s delight, Gu relocates to Sanpo alone and restarts the family’s sink business with Chang-hee, who is also doing well in his capacity as an undertaker and very eager to take on his offer. Anything to see his beloved hyung every day. (I love these two guys together.)

Chang-hee: Chang-hee completes his training to become a funeral director. He also helps Hyun-ah to realize he has fought so hard to get to where he is, and he isn’t going to descend back to the pit he’s crawled out from. Is she willing to be with such a man? They decide to remain just friends and support each other along the way. A new character is introduced as a romantic interest for Chang-hee.

Despite finding one of the many meanings in his life, he longs for his hyung. He still bikes around the mountains, since it’s the one thing that tethers Gu’s presence in Seoul, and this is where he and Gu finally meet up. Gu is aloof as usual — the exact opposite of the spirited Chang-hee, who once again jumps on his hyung, embracing him tightly, and sheds more than three year’s worth of tears. Chang-hee finally gets to pour out his thoughts and it lasts long into the night, with Gu listening to him, smiling intermittently at his leaps and falls.

After pouring his heart out, Chang-hee drops the bombshell on Gu with the details surrounding Mama Yeom’s passing. Gu is beaten to the ground after learning how his leaving affected this family, because he sent their strongest child to rock bottom. Chang-hee calls Gu out for worming his way into the family and then leaving them all hanging just like that. Even though it was unintentional, he owed it to the family to explain himself, knowing what he was to them. Chang-hee then drops the details on Mi-jung, Ki-jung, and Daddy Yeom. After this, we skip forward to them working the sink business together in Sanpo.

Later, Mi-jung later moves back to Sanpo to be with Gu Ja-kyung (he’s using his full name now). She still commutes to Seoul for work on some days despite owning a car. Gu waits for her at the train station on such days, and most times they treat each other like they used to, before returning to Sanpo.

The curtains close on the family house, teeming with grandchildren from all the Yeom siblings.
