Kim Hye-soo protects her princes with The Queen’s Umbrella

I will just write some thoughts and experiences here:

One of the first Asian palace harem dramas I watched was “The Virtuous Queen of Han”, where the titular queen rises from being a mere entertainer to be married to her Love-At-First-Sight Emperor, and how she handles her responsibilities and feelings, since she lives in an age where harems are normal but she loves her husband but she is expected to carry certain duties as the main wife, etc.. (semi-spoilers?) She is at first sad that other women become pregnant, but she decides to view them all as her own children, and she leads the harem to do the same. Thus, when another concubine’s child is threatened by another concubine, she tries to be understanding of the reasons, but is also enraged that the concubine would harm “her own child”, as it were. The show was far from realistic, but having watched many harem dramas where jealousy is rampant and we rarely have to see the heroine in that position, it intrigued me. It carries another kind of strength of heart, and speaks to me because I love children and I would love to see the second most powerful woman in the country (in this drama, after the Queen-Dowager I guess) protect the children, even if they are not her own.

So this show, where the queen decides to protect the royal family’s honour by protecting the princes, even those that are not hers (I assume, at least), there is something there that just draws me to it! I mean, I do not care for helicopter-parents, so I hope it is not what they mean about her taking their education in her own hands. But I am excited nonetheless!
