One Dollar Lawyer: Episode 2 One Dollar Lawyer: Episode 2

Ji-hoon has brought some mysterious evidence to court to win the case and set the adorable ex-pickpocketer free to be a good father again. Mari allows it to be submitted as evidence, because she doesn’t see the worth in it. Indeed, it is that very lack of intuition that loses her the case.

What Ji-hoon has brought in the lunchbox is a big fat nothing. That nothing, he says, is the amount of evidence they have to prove his client is guilty. And adding onto that, he has the pickpocket pinch a wallet in the middle of the courtroom to illustrate oh-so-effectively that this guy is so good he would never get caught in the act.

Ji-hoon wins the case, and it’s another feel-good moment for our innocent family who gets a new start on life, as well as everyone in the Ji-hoon crowd: they saved another person whom the law was discriminating against, and they did it via an unconventional method that was a small dunk, thanks to Ji-hoon knowing how to relate to a jury.

Indeed, there was someone in the courtroom who was very impressed by Ji-hoon’s skills: it’s LAWYER BAEK HYUN-MO (Lee Deok-hwa, in another powerful role with another troublesome grandchild to sort out — sans the sheet masks and drama-watching).

Lawyer Baek is actually Mari’s grandfather… and the head of the ultra prestigious Baek Law Firm where Mari is destined to land. Except not yet. Grandpa says she must intern for two months with a certain other law firm first… and sure enough it’s Ji-hoon’s ramshackle practice.

This is a super fun development, because it shows that Grandpa knows what it takes to be a truly good lawyer (not just book learnin’), and he wants his granddaughter to learn that very important lesson. But she has a mini tantrum instead, which we kind of expect?

One Dollar Lawyer: Episode 2

Ji-hoon doesn’t want to take Mari on any more than she wants to be there — and Mari interrupts a hilarious running gag of Ji-hoon and Moo-jang regularly ducking their scary ajumma landlord because they’re late on the rent (again).

The fun of this whole interlude, of course, is the teasing and jokes — Ji-hoon’s deadpan humor and Mari’s prissy outrage. But she’s soon given a chance to prove herself (ish) when the landlady makes her appearance (1,000 won in tow) and asks for Ji-hoon’s legal assistance in sorting out some hyper-technical rules for Go-Stop. Ji-hoon plays a nice charade, and gets Mari to join in — it’s her first mini trial by fire.

One Dollar Lawyer: Episode 2

A knock on Ji-hoon’s door one afternoon leads to his next case, of sorts. He sees no one when he opens the door and has to double back to see the little boy that’s there on behalf of his grandfather. Said grandfather is a security guard at an apartment complex, and he’s regularly pushed around and bullied by a real jerk of a resident. The old man is treated like his personal slave — and then blamed for everything that goes wrong, most recently a scratch on the bumper of his precious car.

Well, Ji-hoon has an interesting way of dealing with that. He runs a hand cart at top speed into the man’s car by “accident” and knocks the entire bumper off. Ji-hoon then walks off with a cheeky grin, telling Mari if she can solve that mess, he’s willing to take her on.

Well, we knew from the promos that Mari was going to have to intern with Ji-hoon, but I like the way the drama set up their characters and antagonism before that. This show is really all about the kooky moments and hijinks, so I hope that can continue — and increase — once Mari joins our crew.

I didn’t laugh quite as much in the second episode as I did in the first, but I was glad to see the show keeping up the silly humor, from Ji-hoon hiding out with the ajummas, to messing with a curling iron at his desk. It’s only the first week, but I’m hoping the drama will dial up the fun, while also giving us a bit more detail on Ji-hoon’s character. Right now all we’ve got is the big jar where he meaningfully stores his 1,000 won fees. But with Choi Dae-hoon, Lee Chung-ah and more to join the scene still, I think there’s a lot more plot (and backstory) headed our way.
